The Smith River This is my 21st year
of guiding on the Smith River and the river is as special today as it
was when I first started. The Smith River is the "Crown Jewel"
of all Northwest Rivers. All day long you are drifting along side
majestic old growth redwood trees that are almost 300 feet tall. The setting
is spectacular and the fishing can be just awesome. The King Salmon in
the Smith run anywhere between 10 and 40 lbs. with a few fish in the 50
lb. class caught every year. We are Backbouncing bait, Backtrolling
Kwikfish and Flatfish on on occasion Bobber fishing for these big Kings.
As soon as our King season ends, we start fishing for Steelhead.
People come from all over the world to fish for Smith River Steelhead.
The Steelhead fishing on the Smith River is as good as it gets anywhere
in the world. These fish average 8-14 lbs. with a few trophy class fish
caught over 20 pounds landed every year. The California State Record
Steelhead comes from the Smith River a giant weighed in at 27pounds 4
ounces. Also known as "Little Kenai" this river holds
some monster fish. |
The Klamath River The "World Famous" Klamath River supports one of the largest runs of King Salmon on the west coast. Every year the Iron Gate Fish Hatchery has 40 to 75 thousand fish come into the Hatchery. I am fishing the Klamath River in Hornbrook, CA. This is the end of the road, we are fishing the stretch of river right below the Iron Gate Dam and the Iron Gate fish Hatchery. The salmon get so stacked up here that 15-25 fish days are not uncommon. At this time we are Backbouncing, Suspending or Jet Diving bait. This is the perfect place to bring the women and kids King Salmon fishing, as there is lots of action and the weather is usually sunny and warm.
